Puppy chewing is a perfectly normal behavior. Puppies do not know what is acceptable to chew and what is not acceptable until you teach them. When you bring your puppy home there are some basic guidelines that will assist you in teaching you puppy to live comfortably in your home and direct his chewing appropriately:

‘Ring the Bell’ Potty Training Technique

Although there are many different techniques out there for potty training your new puppy, but to me, one really sticks out.

I love teaching the ‘ring the bell’ to go out to potty to my puppies. It’s fairly easy and it seems that the puppies love it.

Xylitol - A Hazard to Your Dog

If you like to give your dog sugarfree treats, be aware that products containing Xylitol can cause severe problems.

Xylitol is a white crystalline substance that looks and  tastes like sugar. Puppy dogs that ingest xylitol may develop a sudden drop in blood sugar causing depression, loss of coordination, and even seizures. Symptoms can develop very quickly.  Some reports show results in as little as 30 minutes after ingestion.

Puppy Dogs, Tapeworms and You

There is a common misconception that dogs and can only get tapeworms from eating bad food, but there are many other ways:

  • Swallowing fleas, which commonly carry the parasite
  • Eating infected rodents such as mice, squirrels and birds
  • Being around other infected dogs and pets

You, yourself can also be infected with tapeworms by a dog that has them also.

Benefits to Spaying or Neutering Your Dog

Not every dog owner wishes to breed his or her dog. If you are one of these people, you may consider spaying or neutering. There are quite a few overlooked benefits to this such as:

  • Keep our dog from roaming and getting injured or lost.
  • Avoid unwanted litters
  • Eliminate sexual frustration, mounting or humping
  • Eliminate urinary marking of ‘territory’

Open Windows, Fire Escapes, Rooftops and Puppy Dogs

During hot weather, many people who don’t have or use air conditioners, like to try to create a cool environment for themselves and their dog. If not thought out well enough, there are some dangers involved:

  • If you leave a few windows open in your home to help create a nice cool cross-breeze, be sure to install secure window screens (or safety bars) in any of the windows which will be left open to avoid dogs falling out of windows.

Puppy Dogs and Pickup Trucks

We see it all the time. Cruising down the road in the back of a pickup truck, a big doggie standing up on the side railing of the truck, with not a worry in the world.

This can be one of the most dangerous situations you can put your puppy dog in. One quick slam on the breaks, or fast swerve to miss an object on the road, could end in disaster.
