Puppy Dogs, Tapeworms and You
There is a common misconception that dogs and can only get tapeworms from eating bad food, but there are many other ways:
- Swallowing fleas, which commonly carry the parasite
- Eating infected rodents such as mice, squirrels and birds
- Being around other infected dogs and pets
You, yourself can also be infected with tapeworms by a dog that has them also.
A few common symtoms that can be visible in both dogs and people are:
- nausea
- weakness
- loss of appetite
- abdominal pain
- diarrhea
- weight loss
Severe cases of infection can even lead to organ and tissue damage, vitamin deficiencies, fever, and even seizures, so if you suspect your pet has been infected, check with your vet immediately. Tapeworms can cause a number of health issues for you and your dog that may be avoided with prompt action.
