Xylitol – A Hazard to Your Dog

by puppy on May 28, 2007

If you like to give your dog sugarfree treats, be aware that products containing Xylitol can cause severe problems.

Xylitol is a white crystalline substance that looks and  tastes like sugar. Puppy dogs that ingest xylitol may develop a sudden drop in blood sugar causing depression, loss of coordination, and even seizures. Symptoms can develop very quickly.  Some reports show results in as little as 30 minutes after ingestion.

It has long been thought that only large doses resulted in canine health issues, but new research suggests that small amounts of the substance can also be dangerous.

The bottom line is to keep all candy, gum and other foods containing xylitol out of your dogs’ reach. If you suspect that your dog may have ingested xylitol-sweetened products call your local vet or the Animal Poison Control Center hotline at 1-888-426-4435 for assistance.

You rely on your dog for companionship and security. Be sure he can trust you for the same kind of concern.
