Training Your Puppy Dog to Use a Litter Box
Most people probably never thought they would see the day that puppy dogs would be using the litter box. Litter boxes are only for cats right? Wrong!
The demand in recent years for a better ‘waste management’ system for dogs, has spurred all kinds of equipment for litter box training your puppy. Behind this new push are people who live in the city, mostly apartments, that don’t have easy access to the outdoors to let their pup out 10 times a day.
The equipment is fairly basic, consisting of a sturdy plastic pan to house the litter (many people use a small storage container), a bag of special dog litter (highly absorbant and is embedded with a special scent to attract dogs), and a scooper (cat scooper works fine) to clean out the mess. The concept to teach your dog is very similar to paper training, but clean up is much easier. Just like with a cat box, you scoop it up, toss it, and you’re done.
Litter training is recommended for small to meduim breeds only, as it should be fairly obvious that larger breeds just won’t fit in the box, and you may have more of a mess in the end.
