Puppy Dogs and Animal Bones
Over the years we have seen a lot of confusion over the idea of giving dogs other animal bones to chew on, for example, chicken bones, turkey bones, deer bones, etc.
Most of us heard the old saying that chicken bones may splinter and could cause your dog to choke to death. This assumption may have a ring of truth to it. Altho it never has really been proven, a good rule of thumb is to never give your dog ‘cooked’ bones. The cooking process always makes bones become brittle, and very sharp when broken.
Altho these days, no bone is really recommended to give to your puppy as a chew toy, but if you insist on giving him a bone anyways, just make sure:
- It is uncooked
- You do not let him chew on it for hours
- You are available to supervise or ‘check in’ every so often
Both your puppy dog and you, will be glad you followed these few simple safety guidelines.
