Flea and Tick Products: What Works?
There are many types of flea and tick control products out there today, but if you have never had to deal with a severe flea infestation or flea control, you may only know about products such as flea sprays, flea powders, flea collars and flea dips. Here is the lowdown on what is effective and what really is a waste of you and your dog’s time.
Flea powders and flea sprays and other topical remedies for your home and sometimes the dog itself really are not really very effective. Many of these types of products contain pesticides and poisons that can make your dog sick. Products like Frontline spray work better, are safer for your dog, and cost about the same price when long-term effectiveness is factored in.
Flea dips are a good choice for big dogs, because larger dogs are harder to treat with spot or spray flea control. When you are ready to dip your dog, you will need to treat his or her entire body from nose to tail, about every three weeks throughout the spring and summer, during prime flea season. You must bear in mind that a flea dip is a pretty smelly process so it may not be a good option for indoor dogs. Small dogs are better treated with Frontline or Advantage.
Flea collars are relatively cheap and are an effective form of flea control. If your pet already has an active flea infestation in his or her coat, it is too late for a flea collar, however. Keep in mind that flea collars generally smell funny, are are not recommended for dogs that have a lot of interaction with very small children.
