Rules To Follow When You Have Kids and a New Puppy

If you have ever gotten a puppy as a child, you might already know there are some things that kids and puppies have in common. Neither one has any experience with the other. If you teach kids how to live with a new puppy, you will find that they grow up to love and adore each other and form a bond that is never broken. Some effort on your part as a parent will be to teach the rules to follow with the new puppy.

A Child’s Memories of Their First puppy

As you may remember from your experiences of getting your first puppy, it was a joyful time and you have them memories for a lifetime. If you want your child to have the same memories, you will need to teach them a few rules about having a puppy. You need to sit down with the puppy and your child and explain some things about puppies.

What to Expect With The New Puppy

The child is going to be excited, but then so is the puppy. The puppy may also be a little scared and shy being away from the mother and in a new home. The thing to teach a child is that they need to give the puppy a chance to get used to the new surroundings. This means the puppy needs his own space for a while until he is ready to greet you.

Children need to understand that shouting or any loud noises such as yelling and fighting will make the puppy even more afraid than it already is. The puppy needs to be in a quiet home until he or she adjusts to the new surroundings. Constant grabbing of the puppy may also upset the it and leave the puppy with a fear of the child. This could cause problems as the puppy grows up.

The best way to teach children about the rule to follow is to sit down with them before you consider bringing the puppy home and tell them about what can scare the puppy and how they must act around the puppy. Teaching children the proper behavior will make the  adjustment easier for the puppy and the family. Once they understand how it will be for a while with the new puppy, you are then ready to bring the little one home to meet the kids.
